Why Should you Care about Parabens in Shampoo & Body Care Products?

Recently there has been a lot of discussion about parabens, particularly in the health and beauty industry, and how parabens may be bad for your health. Parabens are a group of chemicals that are used in many products that people use everyday.  Parabens’ main role is to act as a preservative to prevent bacterial growth in many different products. They are used in products because they are an inexpensive ingredient and are effective in preventing the growth of fungi and bacteria. Lately, people have become increasingly aware of the potential health dangers that parabens can pose. This has lead many people to search for all-natural or organic products that are free of parabens. These types of products are not as hard to find as they once were, as the health, beauty, and pharmaceutical industries have begun to understand that people desire more natural products.

Why Parabens are bad and what Skin Problems do they cause?

Parabens are potentially bad for a number of reasons. They affect people in different ways. Many products that come into contact with skin contain parabens, which often cause irritation of the skin. This is particularly true for adults, children or babies with sensitive skin. If you or your child has sensitive skin you may find that moisturizers, shampoos, and bath products, which contain parabens, may be causing the skin problems. Common skin problems associated with parabens include dermatitis, rosacea and other allergic reactions.

What Kind of Products Contain Parabens?

Parabens are found in an array of products. As mentioned earlier, parabens are commonly used in the health and beauty industry. Specifically used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and skin products including night facial creams, day facial creams, body moisturizers and lotions. They are also found in other items used for personal hygiene such as deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo and shaving gels.

What does paraben-free mean and what are the benefits of using paraben-free products?

The phrase “Paraben Free” means that the product contains no parabens. Everyone can benefit from using paraben-free products because parabens negatively affect the health of all ages. It is beneficial to try and replace products that do not contain parabens with more natural ingredients.

Many brands now make paraben-free products for all ages. If you have a baby, replace the body care lines used at bath time, and any other products that are going to come into contact with your baby’s skin. Monkey Sea Monkey Doo’s baby body care line is an all-natural baby shampoo that is free from sodium lauryl sulfate and parabens. With young children it is important to use the best products containing the gentlest natural ingredients.

No matter what the age, everyone should consider using paraben-free products. Search for products that say “paraben free,” and always read the ingredients’ list.  Pay extra attention to products that come into contact with your skin such as toothpaste, moisturizers and shampoos. This will ensure that hormone levels are not being negatively affected, reduce your risk of getting breast cancer and ensure that skin is not absorbing chemicals that irritate it. Going paraben free, and using all natural products will benefit your overall health and the health of your family.

  1. Are there such things as “natural” parabens which are not harmful in hand cremes? I recently checked out an expensive French cosmetic line with a hand creme that had 5 or 6 different types of parabens in it.
